Oliver McGowan Training

Why is this training required?

In July 2022 an amendment was made to the Health and Social Care Act which meant all health and social care staff in CQC regulated services should receive mandatory learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role within the organisation.

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism has been co-developed with people with a learning disability and autistic people.

The training course is named after Oliver McGowan, whose tragic, avoidable death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to receive better training.

It is the government's preferred and recommended training course for health and social care staff.

There are 2 tiers to the training:

Tier 1 Training

Tier 1 is a 90 minute e-learning course plus a 1 hour interactive online session with a trio of experts, including lived experience trainers - a person with a learning disability, an autistic person and a facilitator. This tier is aimed at staff who require general awareness of learning disability and autism and whose roles include:

• Admin
• Cleaners
• General staff who do not have daily contact with clients

Tier 2 Training

Tier 2 is the same 90 minute e-learning course, plus a one day face to face training session with a lead trainer, an expert with lived experience trainer of learning disability and an autistic expert with lived experience trainer. This tier is aimed at all staff who have daily contact with and provide direct care to clients

Both sections have to be completed to achieve compliance.

Training Course Cost:

£1500 plus VAT (Approximately) for up to 15 staff
